Read this book several times and enjoyed it every time!
As some other readers, I read 'Black House' before reading 'The Talisman'. As I read it, (Black House) realised there HAD to be another book.
Having read it, it reminds me of (the sadly negected) 'The Magician's Nephew' by C.S. Lewis, the first of 'The Chronicles of Narnia'. In that story, tricked by a rather nasty uncle, two young friends find gateways to different worlds, the young boy defeats evil forces, returning with something brought from the other worlds. (for the same reason as Jack in 'The Talisman')
So I guess this is the outline but being Stephen King & Peter Straub - definitely a scary and sometimes gruesome version.

Bought this on the recommendation of a friend. Wish I hadn't. It's simply a horror story - and there is enough real horror in the world.

This book is a typical example of what Mr King is capable of when he really puts his mind to it. It is absolutely unputdownable and progresses at a fantastic pace. There is a whirlwind of worlds, monsters, hallucinations... as the author duo makes it all come real. There is the hallmark character portayal by Stephen King as each character comes alive and we live through the sory than just read it. Finally, what I really look forward to in books - a fitting climax that ties all the threads.
I will thoroughly recommend it to SK fans and first time readers alike.
Word of advice: Don't waste money on it's sequel - 'The Black House'

I read the Talisman many years ago, when at University - I had to have it!!!!! Once bought I then had to share it with my friends - let them see for themselves how good it was. Sadly on moving to a different country, it wasn't returned so I lost it. Now at last it is mine again!!!!!! Being a fan of fantasy novels I can honestly say it is one of the best out there......

I enjoyed this book because it sends the reader , with the hero, on a journey of phantastic proportions and here it illustrates the capacity for story telling and adventure of the writers. A very nice adventure, with touches of horror , in the same vein as MacCammon
